Type B Liquid Explosive Detection Systems, Bottle Scanners for Screening of Liquids & Gels

Company Cobalt Light Systems
Date 23.09.2013

Cobalt Light Systems is pleased to announce that it will supply its INSIGHT100 Liquid Explosive Detection System (LEDS) to Amsterdam Schiphol as well as Rotterdam The Hague, Eindhoven, and Maastricht airports.

The INSIGHT100 uses a ground-breaking laser-based technology to chemically analyse and identify materials inside sealed bottles even if the container is opaque and the liquid cannot be directly viewed. The INSIGHT100 product is approved to the highest European standard 3 for LEDS and was selected by Schiphol Airport after field trials earlier in 2013.

Recent EU legislation requires the introduction of screening at EU airports, by no later than 31st January 2014, of a limited category of liquids under a phased implementation. The first phase is limited to the screening of transfer duty free carried in officially sealed tamper-evident bags, and liquids carried for medical and essential dietary purposes, using LEDS. The purchase of the INSIGHT100 is in response to this EU legislation and introduces enhanced security. Current restrictions were introduced in 2006 following a foiled terrorist plot to smuggle viable improvised liquid explosive devices disguised in drinks bottles in hand luggage onto transatlantic flights leaving London bound for North America.

Cobalt Light Systems is a UK company based in Oxfordshire and was spun out from the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) following novel research conducted at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The INSIGHT100 product was developed with the help of cross-government funding from a number of departments and agencies.
