Vaisala signs a USD 19 million contract

Company Vaisala Oyj
Date 28.10.2016

Vaisala has signed a USD 19 million contract with the Ministry for Transport and Aviation of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The contract includes four weather radars on four islands, nine Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) for airports and 16 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) as well as civil works and installation services. Meteorological software and training will be delivered together with the Finnish Meteorological Institute. In addition, the contract includes a five years’ service agreement. The deliveries will start in the beginning of 2017 and are planned to be completed by the end of 2018.

Vaisala’s weather radar is the most effective instrument to observe rainfall as well as to monitor hurricanes and tropical storms. It helps to build reliable early warning systems in order to alert the population of hurricanes, flooding and storm surges. Vaisala AWOS helps airports to operate efficiently and airlines to aviate safely under all weather circumstances.

“Over recent years, severe weather, hurricanes and tropical storms have become a more frequent phenomenon in the Caribbean. Vaisala can with its versatile experience support the Bahamas Meteorological Department in observing and forecasting present and future weather conditions more timely and reliably. The improved forecasting will help to minimize losses of lives and damages to property during severe weather conditions in the Bahamas. This contract is a proof of our leadership in AWOS systems and C-Band weather radars”, says Jarkko Sairanen, Executive Vice President of Vaisala Weather Business Area.
