Airfield ground lighting is the most critical navigational aid at the airport. It is expected to be operative 24/7. This is why airfield lighting design involves multiple back-ups to minimize the probability of lighting outage.

However, the risk of complete loss of runway lighting is impossible to mitigate. One single and unpredictable event – loss of mains power supply – can cause entire lighting outage. Over the last 5 years, it happened with such international airport hubs as Dubai, Atlanta, Chicago, Heathrow and many others. It proves that even the most sophisticated wired runway lighting shares the same major threat: complete loss of power supply is impossible to mitigate.

However, is there any way to reduce this risk to zero?

To answer this question, we refer to the design of typical conventional hard-wired runway lighting. Lights require constant power supply to operate. Electricity is transported via electrical distribution network. It consists of hundreds of components few of which are bottlenecks of the system. Substation fire, loss of constant current regulators, cable damage or even power outage at a city power plant – anyone of those can shut the system down.

In S4GA systems – power supply loss is virtually impossible. There are two main reasons for that:
1. Unlike in conventional systems where power supply is centralized, in S4GA system each light has its own independent power source. It is called distributed power source. There are as many power sources as there are lights in the system.
2. Because S4GA lights are not physically connected – there is NO single element that can cause failure of an entire system. Potential failure of one or few lights have zero impact on operations of the runway lighting.

Distributed power source and autonomy of every element secures S4GA lighting from the most critical power supply failures inherent in conventional hard-wired systems. It eliminates risks associated with wired runway lighting and makes S4GA – World’s Safest Runway Lighting.
