Date 29.07.2010

Frequentis AG, the global market leader for communication and information systems in air traffic management, has recently delivered the new voice communication system for Glasgow Prestwick Airport, as part of a communications upgrade for this famous Scottish airport.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport took delivery of the Frequentis 3020X voice communication switch for its existing air traffic control tower. The VCS 3020X comprises of ten working positions plus a remote position in the fire station, which is connected back to the central switch via HDSL modems. In addition to accessing the normal telephone and radio resources, the 3020X also provides the operators with a “Clearance to Land Indicator”, which replaces the old analogue system. In order to meet the flexible working environment, all engineering training was carried out on site by the Frequentis training department, followed by operator training prior to going operational.

Glasgow Prestwick airport is used extensively by low cost airline Ryanair amongst a number of other airlines and corporate traffic. Located some 32 miles from Glasgow City Centre, Prestwick also has the benefit of its own railway station. The airport it self has a long history, coming in to being a mere ten years after the Wright Brothers first took to the air, so it is an important historical aviation centre for Scotland.

The new VCS not only ensures that the communication system complies with the latest CAP 670 requirements, but also that it can keep pace with the growing air traffic at the airport. The Airports Engineering Manager, Graham Vint stated: “Frequentis have performed magnificently and their team were able to deliver to a very demanding time scale, one of the benefits of working with the leading ATC solutions provider in the world”.

Up to now, Frequentis together with its subsidiary in the UK, has delivered equipment to 21 aerodromes in the United Kingdom and to NATS for its centres in Scotland and England. In addition, the company has significant UK Military projects utilising its state-of-the-art technologies.
