Voice Communication Systems for Air Traffic Control

Company FREQUENTIS
Date 08.07.2010

Another new order is further proof of the continuing popularity of integrated tower solutions from Frequentis. The company’s latest success is a contract from the Norwegian air navigation service provider, AVINOR, to provide an integrated solution for their ICAMS (Integrated Control and Monitoring System) project. The framework contract covers the upgrade of conventional towers to ICAMS-towers within the next three years.

The project will see regional towers equipped with Frequentis smartTools – a modular toolbox integrating various information and control applications. The ICAMS solution will include smartMET (meteorological data display), smartNAV (NAVAID status indication), smartATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) and smartLICOS (lighting control system).

Among the features and functions included are:

•    Airfield lighting control

•    Control and monitoring systems for navigational aids (warning, alarm and on/off)

•    Integration with the direction finder system

•    Meteorological information

•    Status of voice recorder, generator, UPS system

•    T ower    cabin    control    (curtain,    roof    lights)

The solution is tailored to the needs of small regional towers, allowing a tower to be operated from one integrated working position. A remote maintenance concept centralises technical monitoring of several airports within one monitoring centre: this reduces maintenance costs for the customer. The first rollout stage covers five airports, with additional rollouts in subsequent years.

Tower Automation Systems – a platform for efficient information processing

With its TAPtools® (Tower and AirPort tools), Frequentis offers a modular product range that is tailored to meet all the task-related needs of air traffic controllers. The integration of various data sources and applications and its uniform presentation on the user’s display help controllers absorb information much faster. TAPtools® for weather data, the Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS), NAVAID status, lighting control and electronic flight strips (smartStrips) simplify the controller's work and increase each individual's efficiency.
