Voice Communication Systems for Air Traffic Control

Company FREQUENTIS
Date 01.09.2010

Frequentis is supplying SNCFT with the VoIP-based FTS 3020 Fixed Terminal System. The system will be seamlessly integrated into the operator’s network as part of the overall signalling and GSM-R communication solution provided by Nokia Siemens Networks, SNCFT’s main contractor for this project. The deal is Frequentis’ second big success in a Maghreb state, reinforcing its position as the industry leader in GSM-R Fixed Terminal Systems.

Tunisian Railways (SNCFT – Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Tunisiens) is the second rail organisation in North Africa to get a GSM-R dispatching system built by Frequentis, but the first to opt for a pure VoIP solution. The company is equipping the 280km route between Tunis and Sfax with the most sophisticated system currently available on the market, which is based on the FTS 3020 Rel.2.1. Tunis hosts the central equipment, while Dicora P15 and Dicora S15 workstations (for primary and secondary controllers respectively) are being rolled out along the route. A DIVOS 3log voice and data logger for recording purposes is also part of the supply contract. The system is expected to be fully operational during 2010.

Frequentis adapted their dispatcher system to SNCFT’s operational requirements by implementing the custom “Depeches Ecrit” feature. “Our aim is to meet the specific needs of our customers, so we are happy to adapt systems to ensure easy integration into existing environments, all the while adhering to the very highest usability standards,” says Thomas Karl, Director Public Transport at Frequentis AG.

“Frequentis enjoys an excellent track record as one of the leaders in voice communication systems for public transport market,” says Johann Garstenauer, head of railway solutions, Nokia Siemens Networks. “And Nokia Siemens Networks is the undisputable global market leader for GSM-R networks. Together we will ensure in this project a state-of-the-art digital railway signalling and GSM- R communication system that increases the Tunisian railway service’s reliability and safety.”
