Voice Communication Systems for Air Traffic Control

Company FREQUENTIS
Date 30.09.2011

From equipment upgrades to brand new installations, three more UK airports have selected Frequentis’ air traffic control communications systems as their operational needs demand they utilise state-of-the-art equipment.

With the volume of freight and holiday traffic movements at East Midlands Airport (EMA) placing it as the 10th busiest in the UK in 2010, Manchester Airport Group are upgrading their air traffic management communications to ensure that systems keep pace with operations which run 24/7.

Frequentis has been awarded a contract to replace its existing system which was installed in 1999. The 3020X VCS has nine working positions and provides integrated voice communications for radio, telephone and intercom and will mean a significant upgrade from its original key and lamp system to thelatest in touch screen technology. The new VCS complies with the latest CAP 670 requirements and its simple user interfaces and millisecond connection setup has led to its adoption on a global basis. It is anticipated that the system will go live at EMA in November 2011.

On a smaller scale with approaching 14,000 movements a year, SCATSTA-Shetland, the UK’s most northerly airport, is also going to be the recipient of a Frequentis 3020X VCS. Cyrrus is the Primecontractor for the upgrade to the tower and work has commenced with a target live date of Summer 2012 when the modernisation programme will be completed. The airport is primarily used for transporting oil workers out to the rigs.

Frequentis was also involved in the recent upgrade at the Stobart Air owned London-Southend Airport where a new state-of-the-art tower has gone live replacing its original tower, which was constructed as a temporary measure around 50 years ago. Frequentis, were sub contracted by Systems Interface Ltd, the Prime Contractor. Systems Interface were responsible for the electronic logistics systems and installed the 3020X VCS as the facility gears up for an increase in traffic at the airport, which is undergoing a significant investment and development programme.

These contracts bring the number of UK civilian and military airports utilising Frequentis equipment to 23.
