Voice Communication Systems for Air Traffic Control

Date 19.11.2012
In October, Frequentis USA successfully completed and implemented the addition of a new SATCOM Voice dialing feature to its VCS3020X system for ARINC’s voice communications centers in San Francisco, New York, and a test site in Annapolis.

These enhancements allow the ARINC systems to become an integral piece of global SATCOM Voice traffic. A special graphical user interface (GUI) now allows ARINC radio operators to intuitively communicate with aircraft using SATCOM Voice. The 3020X interfaces real time flight plan data and automatically translates and parses the information, allowing ARINC radio operators to automatically display detailed data for SATCOM-equipped aircraft and allows one-touch dialing. The new SATCOM feature increases efficiency and takes work load off the radio operators, allowing them to focus more on processing vital Air Traffic Control (ATC) information. “ARINC would like to thank the ARINC–Frequentis project team for their diligence and expertise in making this project a success,” says John B. Metzger, Program Director at ARINC.

ARINC provides radio communications services to the FAA for the Oceanic regions under FAA control, as well as directly to the airlines. To cover oceanic routes, ARINC owns, maintains and operates a network of HF and VHF radio sites remotely operated from two comm centers – one in San Francisco and one in New York. Both facilities employ the Frequentis VCS3020X Integrated Communications System (ICS). “A reliable and flexible communication system is the core of a successful communications center. Our VCS3020X systems at ARINC’s comm centers lead the way in the world of air traffic service centers,” states Dieter Eier, Vice President of Business Development at Frequentis USA. ARINC first installed the Frequentis VCS3020X in 2008 tailored to its unique operation for Oceanic air traffic services and airline operations.
