Voice Communication Systems for Air Traffic Control

Company FREQUENTIS
Date 06.11.2012

In January 2012, IAA contracted Frequentis to upgrade its AFTN message switch with Frequentis smartMessenger AFTN/AMHS solution. In September 2012, IAA successfully put the system into operation after extensive testing prior to the cutover date.

The system implemented by Frequentis includes operational and test servers installed in the North Atlantic Communications Centre in Ballygirreen, and contingency servers installed in the Shannon ATM Centre. The system connects to domestic communication circuits terminated in Ballygirreen, Shannon, Cork and Dublin, and with international circuits connecting to the centres in Bordeaux (France) and Swanwick (UK). Frequentis supplied a turnkey system and installed all hardware required for the implementation of the system including system servers, operator workstations, routers and firewalls for secure WAN connectivity, and a System Monitoring and Control (SMC) system for SNMP management of all hardware and software components of the system.

The successful cutover of the AFTN/AMHS system in Ireland, the 10th system provided by Frequentis in operation in the ICAO Europe and North Atlantic (EUR/NAT) region, underlines Frequentis strong position in the AFTN/AMHS marketplace. Patrick Tarrant, Project Manager at IAA, commented that he was very pleased with the performance and availability of the system, and its user friendliness.
