Yangon International Airport acquires aircraft recovery equipment to increase preparedness for runway excursions

Incidents with disabled aircraft occur on average four times per week globally and can cause major disruptions of airport operations. On average these type of incidents close down a runway for over 15 hours but recent incidents in India and the Philippines closed down complete airports for days.
In line with ICAO regulations and industry best practices, Yangon Aerodrome Company limited Ltd (YACL), the operator of Yangon International Airport, has decided to invest in its preparedness for such incidents to reduce their impact on the airport’s operations. The Dutch company RESQTEC has been chosen to provide aircraft recovery equipment and to support the airport’s emergency response team with theoretical and practical training. By acquiring RESQTEC’s latest aircraft recovery technologies, Yangon international Airport follows major airports in the region such as Singapore Changi Airport (Singapore), Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi, Vietnam) and the recently opened Beijing Daxing International Airport in China.
“The acquisition of this aircraft recovery equipment is another important YACL’s milestone, in ensuring a continuous operation and Setting The Standard as a High Performance Airport. RESQTEC’s aircraft recovery equipment will provide YACL with autonomous response capability, while reducing dramatically the runway closure time after accidents or incidents, as we have experienced recently. This is not only important for the airport, our customers, the passengers and airlines, but also for the local economy as a whole.” said Mr. Jose Angeja, Chief Operating Officer of Yangon International Airport.

The commissioning of the equipment is planned for July 2020. In the period leading up to the commissioning RESQTEC will train staff of Yangon International Airport up to ICAO standards and support them in increasing their preparedness.
