Munich Airport continues to gain importance as an employment driver: According to the new economic study conducted by Munich Airport (FMG), a total of nearly 37,000 employees were counted on the airport campus by the the end of 2024. This means that the campus has almost completely recovered from the pandemic-related slump and is approaching the 2018 peak of around 38,000 employees.

FMG regularly produces an economic study and job statistics for the entire airport campus, summarizing the most important key data on the added value and employment generated at the airport campus. The new study, which is now available and covers the period up to December 31, 2024, is based on data from approximately 470 companies and authorities operating at the airport. The economic study was conducted in partnership with the Zurich-based research and consulting firm econcept AG and the Munich-based consulting firm CIMA.

700 new apprentices kick off their careers at the airport

Most of the jobs can be attributed to air traffic (around 12,000) and airport operations (around 11,000), followed by public safety and security (just under 5,000). Around 700 trainees and dual students are starting their professional careers at Munich Airport.

The airport is important for the regional labor market. Around a quarter of all jobs subject to social insurance contributions in the Erding and Freising districts are located on the airport campus.

The Lufthansa Group and the Munich Airport Group together account for more than 60 percent of all employees, totaling just under 23,000 people. Of the 37,000 employees at Munich Airport in 2024, 97 percent have permanent contracts and 72 percent work full-time.

Driver of economic growth and prosperity

According to the study, the airport’s gross value added, including indirect and induced effects in Bavaria, amounts to €7.3 billion.

The gross domestic product of the Free State of Bavaria amounted to around €790 billion in 2024. Mathematically, this means that around one in every hundred euros earned in Bavaria is directly related to Munich Airport.

Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport: “In addition to the secure jobs at the airport, the diverse supply and service ties of the companies based at the airport contribute to its enormous economic importance. The airport thus acts as an engine for economic growth and prosperity for the region and the whole of Bavaria.”

According to the study, the airport’s economic importance extends far beyond Bavaria – Munich Airport is also a job engine for the whole of Germany: 105,000 jobs in Germany depend on the value added generated by Munich Airport.
