Budapest Airport celebrates 65 years of Austrian Airlines’ service to Hungarian capital

Budapest Airport, part of the VINCI Airports network, is proud to mark a significant aviation milestone as Austrian Airlines celebrates 65 years of continuous service between Vienna and Budapest on August 8th. Since launching its first flight to Hungary in 1960, the carrier has become a vital connector for travellers between Central Europe and the world.

Budapest Airport is proud to mark a significant aviation milestone as Austrian Airlines celebrated 65 years of continuous service between Vienna and Budapest on August 8th.

Operating up to 21 flights per week during the peak summer season (S25) and 18-21 in winter (W25), Austrian Airlines offers an annual seat capacity of approximately 212,000 from Budapest. Notably, more than 90% of passengers on these 45-minute flights are transfer travellers, highlighting the critical hub role of the flag carrier’s Vienna base. From Budapest, the airline connects travellers to key onward European destinations such as Berlin, Hamburg, Prague, Sofia, and Venice, as well as long-haul gateways in the West like New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), and Los Angeles (LAX) or in the East like Bangkok (BKK) or Tokyo (NRT).

Commemorating decades of collaboration and looking ahead to continued growth and shared success, Markus Klaushofer, CCO, Budapest Airport commented at the celebrations: “We are incredibly proud to celebrate 65 years of partnership with Austrian Airlines. Their commitment to the Budapest-Vienna route and their strong global network has made a real impact on connectivity for Hungarian passengers. Austrian’s seamless transfer service through Vienna continues to offer world-class travel options to Europe and beyond.”

“Anniversary flights are always something very special for all of us – and also a great opportunity to thank the fantastic team in Budapest for decades of professional co-operation,” adds Annette Mann, CEO Austrian Airlines. “The 65th anniversary celebration reaffirms the strong bond between Austrian Airlines and Budapest Airport – definitely built on trust, performance and a shared passion and vision for our customers.”
