Budapest Airport preparing for the summer peak with developments

  • Budapest Airport is developing Terminal 2 until the completion of Terminal+
  • Several innovations enhancing the passenger experience will be implemented this summer
  • Behind-the-scenes developments facilitate the efficiency of the airport infrastructure and safe operation

Several innovations that directly improve the passenger experience and passenger processes, as well as important behind-the-scenes developments will be completed at Ferenc Liszt International Airport in time for the busiest months of the year. These developments are significant in the long term as well; the investments carried out at Terminal 2 in the coming months and years are intended to ensure a seamless transition until the completion of the airport’s comprehensive Terminal+ development package.

Developments to passenger services – more check-in counters, new security screening lanes, new car park

The affordable Relax Parking opened on 1 June, adding 2000 spaces to the long-stay parking capacity and offering nearly 50 electric charging stations for electric vehicles. A bus service runs from the car park every 15 minutes, but the terminal is also accessible by a 15-minute walk.

Passenger check-in capacities have been expanded for the summer at Terminal 2A. Seven new hybrid check-in counters have been installed in an area previously occupied by retail outlets. These can be used as either traditional or self-service baggage drop-off counters, depending on prevailing traffic needs. This has also increased the capacity available for self-service baggage drop-off. Passengers—provided this option is available for their flight—can print their bag tags, weigh and check in their suitcases in just a few minutes without waiting in line. Once placed on the conveyor belt, these bags go through the mandatory processes alongside baggage checked in the traditional manner.

The expansion of the passenger security screening area serves both to improve passenger convenience and to increase capacity. The automatic boarding pass reader gates have been relocated, to optimize space utilization, and additional ones have been installed, to increase capacity. Eight new, longer and more efficient security lanes have been installed, allowing more passengers to prepare for screening at the same time and ensuring faster throughput. This has reduced the number of lanes, while increasing screening efficiency and available space.

To accommodate passenger traffic and weather conditions, the SkyCourt cooling system will be expanded by mid-summer, ensuring a more comfortable environment for passengers even during the summer peak season. As part of the development, two new high-performance air handling units will be installed, enabling the desired indoor temperature to be maintained more effectively in passenger areas even on the hottest summer days.

Behind-the-scenes developments

The airport is also developing behind the scenes, ensuring that efficient infrastructure and high safety / security standards are maintained.

The airport’s firewater pump house has been renovated. In addition to refurbishing the pump house building and replacing the previous 40-year-old pumps, a new diesel-powered pump line with a water delivery capacity of at least 45,000 liters per minute has been installed, providing the airport with a modern, more reliable and higher-capacity system for the long term. The investment further strengthens the fire safety infrastructure of facilities critical to the airport’s operations—hangars, maintenance bases and refueling systems—thereby ensuring their continuous operation.

The refurbishment of taxiway G, covering more than 17,000 square meters, has also been completed. The old pavement structure has been replaced with a heavy-duty subbase and a basalt concrete surface, the gullies have been replaced and a completely new rainwater drainage system has been installed. The area received a new lighting system and information signs have been installed. At the same time, the runways and other aircraft operational areas have been prepared for the summer traffic.
