Flughafen Zürich AG will kick off its comprehensive revitalisation project in the Opfikon to Rümlang section of the River Glatt in spring 2025. The project will serve as an ecological compensation measure for expansion projects at the airport. The new natural watercourse and the doubling of the riverine zone will give rise to valuable habitats for plants and animals. A new recreational area is being created for the general public.
Under the leadership of Flughafen Zürich AG, the River Glatt between Opfikon and Rümlang will be transformed from a canalised riverbed into a natural body of water over the next few years. New river bends, shallow riverbanks and reed meadows will be established over the course of the project. Paths and recreation areas will also be built on both sides of the river, including rest areas and areas with direct access to water.
Environmental project in figures
The Glatt revitalisation project extends along a distance of 3,250 metres and covers an area of 31.3 hectares. A total of 950 new trees will be planted and rare plant species will be established. Construction will take around three years. The costs amount to almost CHF 50 million and will be borne by Flughafen Zürich AG.
Replacement for impaired habitats
The revitalisation project is an ecological compensation measure for the impairment of habitats caused by expansion projects at Zurich Airport. The project will take place in the immediate vicinity of the airport and therefore where the deficits arise. Agricultural land is affected by the project. The soil removed as part of the project will used to upgrade crop rotation areas in Furttal.
Improvement for nature and people
The revitalisation of the River Glatt will create diverse and ecologically valuable habitats in and around the water, while simultaneously reducing the risks of flooding. Local recreation areas for the general public will be expanded as well.
Construction work will start on 1 April 2025. As a first step, preparatory and clearing work will begin in January 2025.
