New campaign targets passengers travelling to India with culturally relevant shopping offers, services and experiences
Frankfurt Airport is celebrating the Hindu festival of Diwali for the first time through a dedicated retail campaign in autumn 2026. Targeting passengers travelling to India from Terminal 1, the initiative focuses on the pre-departure shopping experience, particularly last-minute gift purchases for friends and family. The campaign highlights how a greater understanding of cultural traditions can help airports create more relevant retail experiences for international passengers.
Growing India travel creates retail opportunities
Diwali, one of the most important festivals in Hindu culture, represents a significant opportunity for Frankfurt Airport’s retail operations. In 2025, more than 1.2 million passengers travelled between Frankfurt and India. With many India-bound travellers purchasing gifts at the airport before departure, the campaign connects an important cultural occasion with a specific passenger shopping need.
A tailored shopping experience for Indian travellers
The English-language campaign is being promoted through digital channels, partnerships with Air India and Lufthansa, and selected locations throughout the terminal. Security-area promotions, shopping coupons and special offers from retail and dining outlets encourage passengers to explore the airport’s shopping and hospitality facilities. Personal shoppers are also available to provide individual assistance, while intercultural training helps participating retail employees better understand and respond to the needs of Indian travellers.
“With the Diwali campaign, we’re placing even greater emphasis on the needs of international passengers. It is crucial to design offers, services, and communications in a way that is relevant to the specific moment of travel. For us, this means: We want to understand cultural contexts and translate them into a respectful, inspiring experience before departure,” says Dr Babett Stapel, Senior Executive Vice President of Retail & Real Estate at Fraport AG.
A new approach to airport retail marketing
The initiative moves beyond conventional seasonal retail promotions by placing the needs and cultural expectations of travellers at the centre of the campaign. Rather than simply celebrating the festival, Frankfurt Airport is using its significance to shape relevant shopping offers, services and communications. The approach demonstrates how airports can make retail and hospitality a more meaningful part of the passenger journey by recognising the diverse cultural backgrounds of their customers.
Frankfurt Airport’s retail offering
As one of Europe’s major international aviation hubs, Frankfurt Airport provides an extensive retail, dining and service environment for passengers, visitors and employees. Across its two terminals, the airport has approximately 230 retail outlets, comprising 170 shops and service facilities alongside 60 restaurants, bars and cafés. Together, these occupy around 35,000 square metres of shopping and dining space.
Under the vision The Art of Retail in the Heart of Europe, Fraport’s retail management team, led by Executive Board Member Julia Kranenberg, aims to combine essential passenger services with inspiration, creativity and an enhanced visitor experience. The airport’s international passenger base offers retailers and brands significant exposure, with opportunities to connect with customers throughout their journey and influence purchasing decisions at a time when they are receptive to new products and experiences.
