Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), will begin the phased redevelopment of the North Section of Terminal 1B at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in January 2027.

The redevelopment is being undertaken due to safety concerns surrounding the ageing, approximately 60-year-old terminal infrastructure. The first phase will see the North Section of Terminal 1B demolished, with the work planned to minimise disruption to passengers and airline operations.
Mumbai Airport handles approximately 55 million passengers per year, of which around five million passengers — approximately 9% of the airport’s annual traffic — will be temporarily affected by the de-operationalisation of the affected terminal facilities. MIAL said that around 91% of the airport’s passenger traffic will remain unaffected during the redevelopment.
The North Section accounts for approximately one-third of Terminal 1’s capacity. Airlines operating from the affected facilities have been given the option of temporarily relocating their operations to Navi Mumbai International Airport while the redevelopment takes place.
Following completion of the redevelopment, Terminal 1’s annual capacity is expected to increase from approximately 15 million to 20 million passengers, representing a 33% increase.
MIAL said extensive consultations with airlines regarding the future of Terminal 1 have been ongoing since 2020. The redevelopment plans have also been presented to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) and incorporated into the approved tariff framework.
The phased approach is intended to maintain continuity of airport operations while replacing ageing infrastructure and increasing the long-term capacity of Terminal 1.
