Oman Airports signs a Memorandum of Understanding To supply green waste to the fertilizer factory "Kala"

“Oman Airports” have signed a memorandum of understanding with Oman Water & Wastewater Services Company – a Member of Nama Group of companies – to supply green waste at Muscat International Airport to the compost factory “Kala”, affiliated to the Oman Water & Wastewater Services Company. The MOU was signed by Sheikh Aimen bin Ahmed Al Hosni, CEO of Oman Airports, and Qais bin Saud Al Zakwani, CEO of the Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company.

Sheikh Aimen Al Hosni said that “Oman Airports is working within the national efforts aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, emphasizing its role in the circular economy of cities and maximizing the sustainable value of environmental resources, which confirms the concept of green economy and green cities. In this context, we are pleased to welcome the agreement that we have signed with the Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company, one of the national companies that has a long history in consolidating the concepts of recycling, according to the latest practices worldwide.”

The CEO of Oman Airports added saying, “Airports in the countries worldwide compete to be a model that expresses the efforts of their countries in the search for environmental sustainability solutions and their implementation, as one of the obligations due in the short and long term equally.” In this regard, the specialized international organizations allocate international certificates and accreditations within specialized programs. Oman Airports has achieved great progress in this field, as our endeavors are directed to enable this kind of bilateral agreements that we consider to support our position as a national institution has its contributions in various societal directions.

Moreover, Qais bin Saud Al Zakwani, CEO of Oman Wastewater Services Company, said that: “This agreement comes within the series of initiatives achieved by the company to implement the concept of sustainability, through preserving the environment and maximizing the economic value of our products and services; as recycling and investment of available resources have an utmost priority in the company’s operations and natural compost factory “Kala”, affiliated to the company, which is a model for these practices.”

The CEO added, saying that “the recycling of resources within the Sultanate contributes directly to enabling the green economy and is actually in line with the principles of governance within the vision of 2040, and that the agreement will share to provide a basic component of the factory final components, as the production process of compost factory Kala is implemented by mixing and treating of sewage wastes, which are processed with green wastes according to the highest approved specifications.”

It is worth mentioning that green waste; also known as “biological waste”, is any organic waste that can be converted to fertilizer. It mostly consists of garden wastes; such as grass clippings, tree leaves, and household or industrial kitchen wastes. Green wastes contain high concentrations of nitrogen. Green wastes can be used to increase the efficiency of many fertilization processes and may be added to the soil to maintain the local nutrient cycle.

In addition, green wastes recycling and collection programs for reducing the amount of biodegradable material in landfills, by providing communities with their own compost bins, or can provide them; which are filled with plant and food remains, and can then be regularly emptied. Programs of such communities are active part in composting their green wastes, allowing them to play an active role in reducing the amount of food thrown in landfills.
