Schiphol is taking an important step towards closer cooperation with security companies by setting up new companies with them. Schiphol will own 25% of the shares in each new company, the security company 75%. Three security companies will be chosen by way of a European tender. By doing this, the airport aims to ensure long-term quality of work and cooperation.
Many changes have recently been implemented in security, such as better cooperation in recruiting staff, additional training, improved rest areas and more attention to the working conditions of employees.
To make these changes long lasting, Schiphol believes that a revision of the current working model is necessary. The airport wants to focus on long-term contracts with security companies, aimed at close, transparent cooperation. In a strategic restructuring, Schiphol is reducing the number of security companies from five to three. This means that the layout of the work areas will also be adjusted. This will, among other things, reduce walking distances and give security officers more opportunities for varied work.
New companies
Following the final choice of three security companies, a new private limited company will be established with each of them, with Schiphol owning 25% of the shares and the security company 75%. Security officers and employees of security companies working at the airport will be employed by the three new companies. Together with the unions and security companies, Schiphol will ensure a safe and pleasant working environment.
Investing in quality
The new contracts will include these adjustments, requiring all parties to continue to invest in the quality of service, for example through new training and innovative solutions. By law, Schiphol must issue a European tender for large contracts, so that all suitable security companies within the EU are given a fair chance.
Long-term collaboration
Schiphol wants to enter into long-term partnership. Good working conditions and terms of employment for security officers are key to this. Schiphol wants security officers to be able to work well, safely and with pleasure.
“I am immensely proud of the progress we have made at Schiphol Security over the past year. We have worked hard to improve working conditions, and this tender is an important step to solidify and further expand these improvements. I have met regularly with our security staff to understand their wants and needs. Their feedback has been invaluable, and we have taken it on board as much as possible. Our goal is to create a safe, healthy and enjoyable work environment where everyone can work with satisfaction.” Philip van Noort, Director Schiphol Security
Tendering phases
- From 4 November 2024, security companies can register for the new Schiphol tender. Schiphol will then use selection criteria to decide which companies will be allowed to proceed to the next round.
- In February 2025, the selected companies will receive documents with the contract requirements.
- In September 2025, Schiphol will award the contracts to the three selected companies. Those companies will then prepare for the start of the new contracts.
- In February 2026, the contracted parties will start their security operations according to the new agreements.
Change of contract
An important part of the new working model is the division of the terminal into three areas. Schiphol understands the feeling of uncertainty that this brings for security officers but emphasises that preserving jobs and good working conditions are paramount.
