Ukraine’s first remote driving technology pilot has officially started. The project is being implemented by Uklon, with Boryspil International Airport serving as the first testing platform. The airport’s extensive infrastructure enables comprehensive testing of the technology under a wide range of operating conditions. The initiative also aims to help establish the regulatory and technological groundwork necessary for the future development of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in Ukraine.

“The world is rapidly moving towards remote and autonomous mobility systems. It is important for us that, despite the challenges of war, Ukraine continues to maintain momentum in technological development and remains part of the global innovation landscape. Together with the government, we are ready to help shape a roadmap for AV development and create the conditions necessary for implementing innovations that can transform the future of mobility in Ukraine,” said Serhii Hryshkov, CEO of Uklon.

As part of the project, specialists are testing remote driving technology — a real-time vehicle control system that uses dedicated software, cameras, sensors, lidars, and mobile connectivity. Such solutions represent an important step in the evolution of autonomous transport and may, in the future, help improve safety, increase logistics efficiency, and support the development of inclusive mobility solutions.

“Even with Ukraine’s airspace remaining closed, Boryspil Airport continues to support projects related to the future of mobility systems, digital infrastructure, and emerging transport technologies. We believe that, once flights resume, the competitiveness of modern airports will be determined not only by infrastructure itself, but also by the ability to integrate innovative solutions and technological partnerships,” said Oleksiy Dubrevskyy, CEO of Boryspil International Airport.

The testing involves Uklon partner drivers, including a war veteran who uses a wheelchair. Remote driving technology also opens up additional opportunities for people with lower limb amputations by enabling remote vehicle control through hand-operated systems.

Oleksandr Komarov, CEO of Kyivstar, commented:

“Ensuring a stable low-latency connection is fundamental for remote transport operations. As part of the VEON DO1440 strategy, we are developing a digital ecosystem where connectivity technologies become the foundation for new services and solutions. This project demonstrates how the synergy between the telecom and IT sectors within the Kyivstar Group, which includes Uklon, can create unique solutions and open new opportunities for the country.”

The first demonstration of the remote vehicle control technology took place on 27 May 2026 for representatives of government institutions, public authorities, local self-government, and the media. Among the participants were Oleksandr Bornyakov, Acting Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine; Oleksandr Tsybort, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine; and Kostyantyn Usov, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration.

“Testing and adapting autonomous transport solutions is the next practical step in implementing Ukraine’s WINWIN Digital Innovation Development Strategy 2030. The development of such technologies is critically important for the country’s technological sovereignty and economic growth. We welcome cooperation with the private sector and support companies that are prepared to test and scale innovative technologies together with the state,” said Oleksandr Bornyakov, Acting Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.

The development of such technological partnerships directly contributes to the formation of Ukraine’s future mobility ecosystem, accessibility, and broader technological progress.
