Over the past years, ITW GSE has designed and commissioned thousands of airport projects, including PCAs and 400 Hz equipment. Those  installations have made it obvious that most electrical installations have large excess capacity during actual operation, because they are designed to cover the power needs in a worst-case scenario and not just actual power consumption.

30–50% SURPLUS CAPACITY
We estimate that most gate power and air supply systems operate with 30–50% surplus energy. Since airports are always looking for extra power, there is a clear need to put this surplus to work. That’s what Intelligent Power Management is all about.

Intelligent Power Management lets you connect more equipment at an aircraft stand, while reducing complexity and ensuring that your power consumption never exceeds available capacity.

The IPM system is hosted in the ITW GSE 3500 PCA. The PCA monitors all connected equipment and ensures that aircraft requirements never exceed the installed power capacity at the gate. Should the GPUs, which are the most critical connection during flight preparation, require maximum power for a short period, the PCA smoothly adjusts its own consumption to stay below the pre-set limit of the system as a whole. The drop in PCA capacity occurs briefly, meaning passengers will probably not even notice a change.

INTELLIGENT POWER MANAGEMENT
IPM is the right solution for airports wanting to grow their capacity at an aircraft parking position without investing in more infrastructure. It’s also ideal for airports planning a new terminal or stand. Wherever it’s deployed, IPM helps airports use

available power more intelligently. At new terminals, it will reduce complexity and the cost of power-related installations.

The intelligent  PCA does not compromise the power nor the delivery of fresh air to the aircraft. The airport gets a simpler installation that is easier to maintain and takes up less space.This is much in line with ITW GSE’s philosophy of doing things as simple as possible to increase liability.
