The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is scheduled to get a USD 102 million makeover for its 49-year-old main terminal.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports that the airport's commission has approved the renovation project to begin next year, right around the time the facility will be celebrating its 50th birthday.

Plans include a centralized security screening area, a reconfigured ticket lobby, new concessions and bathrooms for travelers and the replacement of concrete columns on the facade with windows.

Airport spokeswoman Rosylin Weston says the project is important because air service is a major factor for companies deciding whether to move to an area.

Weston says the airport won't have to use bonds or loans to pay for the renovation. Some of the funding will come from a federal government program.
