The Kenya Airports Authority yesterday launched a Kenyan Sh200 million (€1.7 million) new terminal at Malindi Airport, it has announced on Twitter and Facebook.

The development is part of the government’s plan to upgrade the infrastructure to attract tourists and investors in Malindi, which is located on Malindi Bay at the mouth of the Galana River lying on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya and 120km's northeast of Mombassa.

Arriving and departing passengers will use separate terminals, and the terminal has been fitted out with security surveilaince systems.

The authority announed the news on Facebook: "We have opened an ultra modern airport terminal in Malindi that can handle 500 passengers at any given time.

"The new terminal that is estimated to handle 300,000 passengers annually, has adequate space and meets international requirements that ensures separation of departing and arriving passengers."

Local media reports also say that passengers and staff expressed joy over facilities at the new terminal, and many travellers say the new terminal was 'long overdue'.

Facebook user, Goddie Lenkaiduril, commented on the images the authority posted on the social media website and says: "I haven't used it but have been inside the terminal. It symbolises a brighter future for transport and tourism in the coast region. Job well done."
