Aecom to provide design services for third terminal at Hong Kong International

Engineering firm Aecom has been contracted to undertake detailed design services for a new passenger terminal as part of the HK$141.5bn (US$18.2bn) Three-runway System (3RS) being built at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) in China.

The new terminal will cover more than 3,000,000ft² with 57 aircraft parking positions and the capacity to handle 30 million passengers a year when combined with the forthcoming Terminal 2 (T2) expansion project. It will also be built to high sustainability standards with a courtyard featuring lush landscaping at the center of the building, and the extensive use of natural light to help reduce energy consumption. Construction work is already underway with completion scheduled for 2024.

Aecom will be responsible for conducting research and benchmark studies that will assist the design team in delivering the new facility. The studies will look at the future trends in retail and advertising, as well as information technology and airport systems.
