A survey of 32,000 Australians carried out by Wotif.com has revealed that Melbourne Airport is the nation’s favourite after it received 29.5% of the overall votes, The Herald Sun has reported.

In second place, receiving 27% of the votes, was Sydney airport, with Brisbane in third place and Gold Coast in fourth, gaining 16.5% and 6% of the votes, respectively. Hobart airport received just 2% of the Australians’ votes, putting it in last place.

Megan Magill, general manager brand at Wotif.com said it was not surprising Melbourne won the hearts of Australians. “The airport is quite compact and efficiently designed, with good shopping, restaurants and bars making waiting for your flight a lot more enjoyable.”

Melbourne Airport spokeswoman Anna Gillett said it has advantages over the nation’s other airports. “One of the best things about Melbourne airport is the lack of a curfew, it’s a 24/7 operation which means great flexibility for airlines and passengers, people are taking advantage of that. We are also a single terminal precinct so people can easily swap between international and domestic flights, it’s under one roof and quick to do.”

The Wotif.com survey also asked travellers which celebrity pilot they would trust to captain their flight, with Qantas ambassador and pilot John Travolta coming out on top with 53.5% of the votes. Harrison Ford came in second with 15%, Clint Eastwood was third with 12% and Angelina placed fourth with 10% of the vote. Supermodel Gisele Bundchan was the least popular fantasy pilot, only receiving 2% of votes.

When asked what the worst part of flying was, Australians named noisy or smelly passengers as the most annoying(28%), followed by turbulence (20%) and long security lines (15%).
