London Southend Airport will create more than 300 additional jobs if the proposed extension plans for its new terminal get given the go ahead.

The airport has submitted Phase Two of its expansion plan to Rochford Council, who are expected to make a decision in the next few months and, if successful, construction could begin by the end of 2012.

The second part of the expansion plan would see the building become 90m longer, the number of check-in desks, baggage drop-off points and security screening channels increase, the Departure Lounge would grow in size and the Arrivals area would be enlarged. Retail and catering facilities would be expanded to provide a wider range of shops to the two million passengers London Southend Airport expects to receive annually.

London Southend Airport managing director Alastair Welch, said, “This extension will ensure that we are able to maintain the high levels of customer service we intend to be the hallmark of London Southend Airport as our passenger numbers grow. No changes are proposed – or needed – to the binding legal agreement already made with Rochford, Southend and Essex County Council which sets out the comprehensive controls on the way the airport operates, including noise controls, limits on number and type of operations and night flights and promotion of sustainable transport – all of which were already designed to cater for two million passengers a year.”

Phase One of the new terminal building is complete and will become operational on 28 February.
