The Lord Mayor of Belfast has officially opened Belfast City Airport's new €2 million international arrivals lounge.

Alderman Gavin Robinson was joined by Katy Best, Belfast’s commercial and marketing director for the unveiling of the new facility which will provide what the airport said were improved facilities for processing international passengers as Aer Lingus prepares to begin flights to and from Palma, Malaga and Faro in March 2013 as part of its summer schedule.

The Irish national carrier decided to move its operations from Belfast International to Belfast City in earlier this year following a tender process.

“Belfast City Airport is an important economic gateway, not only for the city of Belfast but for the wider region. In acknowledging the important role tourism plays in our city’s future, I welcome this latest investment by the owners of the airport,” Robinson said.

Belfast City has been undergoing expansion since 2009, including a new enlarged departure lounge which opened that November.
