Chennai Airport is set to allow passengers to enter terminal buildings by showing staff their ticket on a smartphone or tablet, according to reports.
Previously, passengers were required to bring a ticket printout to enter the airport.
India’s Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) announced the move this week.
Staff from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), who man the entry and exit gates of terminal buildings, are to be trained to check tickets on phones, tablets or laptops.
“We will have to train them because there will be a change in procedure. The personnel will be given an orientation as soon as we get a notification with details from BCAS. CISF is yet to get the directive,” a senior official of CISF told The Times of India.
An airport officer told the newspaper that it was a “common sight to see passengers running around to get printouts of tickets to enter the terminal”.
“Such inconveniences can be avoided now,” he added.
The old system had been causing inconvenience to passengers who forget or lost their tickets, while getting a cheap printout at the airport is also “difficult”, the newspaper reported.
