Airport News
Design for a second airport in Beijing has started, according to reports.
Green energy and “functionality” will be prioritised over the airport’s appearance an official was quoted as saying in the Beijing Times.
The building of a new airport in Beijing was approved by the State Council in December last year.
Construction is slated to begin in 2014.
The airport, located in the southern Daxing district and Hebei province, will have seven runways, and will be able to handle 70 million passengers annually by 2025.
Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) handled 81.8 million passengers last year.
Aviation publication the CAAC News said that large-scale construction would begin next year, with the airport due to open by the end of 2018.
The project is set to cost more than 70 billion yuan ($11.2 billion), CAAC News added.
