Parsons Brinckerhoff is to provide construction management support services for a series of runway safety area (RSA) improvements at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The RSA improvement program at SFO is part of an initiative to bring all commercial RSAs up to current safety standards.

“The improvements planned at SFO are highly complicated and must be completed with minimal impact on airport operations and in a way that maintains safe conditions for aircraft operations,” a Parsons Brinckerhoff spokesman said.

As construction manager, the firm will provide a full range of construction services, including field oversight of construction contractors, engineering support, constructability reviews, field testing and inspection, and project controls.

The staff supporting the project will be fully integrated into the airport's design and construction division and serve alongside city staff on the program.

It is anticipated that the work will be completed by the end of 2015.
