Austin City Council has approved funding for the East Terminal Infill project at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA), in Texas, USA. The US$62m (£53m) project will improve passenger flow in the airport’s terminal.

To accommodate for increasing passenger numbers, the ABIA terminal will be expanded and additional security checkpoint facilities added. ABIA experienced passenger growth of 4% from 2009 to 2012, with 9.4 million passengers recorded in 2012. Passenger growth reached 5% in May this year, compared to the previous year.

The project will add approximately 5,110m² to the East Terminal and will renovate approximately 1,580m². A new security screening checkpoint with 10 lanes will also be added as well as a larger Customs area.

Austin City Council approved the funding last week (8 August). Construction is scheduled to begin 2013 and anticipated for completion in 2015.
