Growth at Tegel Airport more than offset a dip at Schönefeld in August passenger figures for Berlin’s airports.

Last month, 2,380,787 passengers used Berlin’s two main airports, a rise of 2.3% on August 2012.

But Tegel’s figure was up 5.9% to 1,772,659, while Schönefeld’s slipped 6.7% to 608,127 passengers.

The two airport’s combined flights movements totalled 20,592 take-offs and landings, down 4.1% year-on-year.

Freight also fell 9.8% to 2,806 tonnes.

In the two airports’ relative performance, it was the same story for the first eight months of 2013.

Over the year to August, the two Berlin gateways hosted 17,280,729 passengers, up 4.1% in the same period in 2012.

But Tegel gained 8.6% to cater for 12,862,871, while Schönefeld dipped 7.1% to 4,417,958.

Passenger numbers rose despite flight movements nudging down 1.7% to 158,114 take-offs and landings.

While Tegel’s flights ticked up 2.2% to 115,195, Schönefeld slumped 10.7% to 42,919.

Between January and August, the two airports handled 21,784 tonnes of air freight, up 2.4% on the same period last year.
