A central plaza to create a 'street market atmosphere' will form the centre point of a new satellite building being constructed at Munich Airport.

Philipp Ahrens, general manager of the Project Team Satellite 2, enthused about the expansion yesterday at the SMART Airports conference in Munich.

And according to Ahrens reducing the amount of remote bus boarding passengers have to do is a key part of the Terminal 2 satellite building, which is scheduled for completion in 2015.

The €1.2 billion project is a joint development between airport operator FMG and Lufthansa and will be paid for by the airport operator FMG and Lufthansa on a 60:40 basis and is being built as Terminal 2 is designed to hold 25mppa and is stretched to its limit.

"We want to create a street market atmosphere and we want passengers to have a view of the apron.

"A clear view of the mountains and the aircraft creates a different experience for passengers," Ahrens enthused.

The satellite terminal will be linked to Terminal 2 and have a central plaza with a tower in the middle, as Ahrens said it was to try and get travellers to walk through to get to the gates.

Ahrens told delegates the project encompasses four key parts – the satellite building, transportation, ramp and apron and baggage system.

Phase one is scheduled for completion in 2015 when it will be able to hold 11mppa and phase two will then be started and when finished passenger numbers up to 17mppa can be welcomed.

"The main is to increase customer stands and 28 additional stands will be built and we want to reduce the remote bus boarding at Munich.

"It is a quality step up for us and Lufthansa. There is a real need for this building.

"The satellite building will run on full thrust from day one and increase the quality and reduce remote boarding," Ahrens said.

The development is also set to feature a range of innovative facilities including 10 touch screen information gates, six information gate counters, and sleeping cabins.

Ahrens also said Fraport AG have said future upgrades will be carried out to Terminal 1 and 2, while Munich Airport harbours a dream of one day having a third runway being built.
