Chicago Midway International Airport will introduce a new passport control system to speed up customs clearance time for passengers.
The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) has announced it will launch the innovative Automated Passport Control (APC) programme in the first quarter of next year.
It is being installed to help travellers move more quickly through the US border clearance process by entering information at a self-service kiosk.
The technology aims to increase passenger experience in the arrivals hall by increasing the flow through primary inspection, reducing customs and border wait times and misconnects for travellers.
CDA commissioner, Rosemarie Andolino, says: “The APC programme is another example of how the CDA is striving to create a ‘best in class’ experience for travellers at Midway International Airport.
“Passengers arriving at both Midway and O’Hare’s Terminal 5 will experience shorter wait times, less congestion, and faster processing because of this innovative programme and the extraordinary cooperation between CDA, CBP and our airline partners.”
APC kiosks have already been introduced at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, successfully reducing wait times for passengers arriving at Terminal 5.
Initial CDA data reported the average wait time during peak hours has been reduced by 16 minutes or 33% while the number of passengers waiting over 60 minutes has reduced by 58%.
