A new domestic terminal has opened at Izmir Adnan Menderes International Airport in western Turkey.

The €265 million project was developed by TAV EGE, a fully owned subsidiary of TAV Airports, while Mott MacDonald acted as technical advisor to a consortium of lenders.

Constructed by TAV Construction, the new terminal has a total area of approximately 200,000 square metres with eight boarding bridges and is located immediately alongside the existing international terminal.

This aims to simplify passenger transfer and provides a single consolidated building for operation by TAV EGE.

Mott MacDonald provided technical assistance leading to a successful financial close, and the consultancy also led development of an environmental and social action plan during due diligence phase of the project.

This was implemented by TAV EGE and monitored by the consultancy during construction through monthly site visits.

Additionally, Mott MacDonald reviewed project progress, quality assurance and control, health and safety and IT and systems to make sure that the terminal was ready for the first day of operations.

Adrian Dawes, Mott MacDonald's project director, explains: "A particular focus area for us during this project was ensuring the lenders' environmental and social requirements were implemented during the construction and operation phases of the project.

“Feedback from TAV EGE and TAV Construction has shown that they found our contributions and observations very useful in assisting them to deliver this major fast-track project."
