Work has started on the second stage of construction at Moscow Domodedovo Airport that will see the passenger terminal area more than double in size.

With the first phase of construction near to completion, the second phase will expand the current floor space of 2.5 million square feet to around 5.3 million square feet. The project is due for completion by December 2016.

Moscow Domodedovo Airport is experiencing one of the highest rates of passenger traffic growth in Europe with an increase of 12.8% in June 2014 according to the Airports Council International (ACI) Europe. Approximately 30.76 million passengers passed through the airport in 2013.

The terminal expansion will provide Domodedovo Airport with over 100 check-in counters, 40 self-service kiosks and an atrium furnished with business lounges, cafés, bars, restaurants and duty free shops. There will also be additional aircraft parking stands meant for boarding bridges to accommodate aircraft such as the Airbus 380.
