UK-based architects, Grimshaw, has announced that it is developing the scheme for an airport expansion in Lima as well as the design for a new gateway in Istanbul.

In Peru, Grimshaw has been appointed by Lima Airport Partners (LAP) to design a new second terminal, and a new midfield Air-Traffic Control Tower for the Jorge Chávez International Airport.

It will work alongside CH2MHill and Ramboll on the $950 million project, which is being led by ARCADIS.

The terminal is set to be located on 700 hectares of land located west of the current terminal and, according to Grimshaw, will reflect Lima’s role as a major connection hub.

Jorge Chávez International Airport is a regular award winner and was recently voted 'Best Airport in South America' at the 2014 World Airport Awards.

The conceptual design for the expansion is due to be unveiled by mid-2015.

Meanwhile in Turkey, Grimshaw has begun working on the scheme design for the Istanbul New Airport as part of an international architectural team that includes Nordic Office of Architecture, Haptic Architects and local Turkish Partners GMW Mimarlik and Tekeli Sisa.

The team has been appointed by İGA Havalimanı İşletmesi AŞ, which is founded by a Turkish consortium of CMLKK, while the project is master planned by Arup.

Based on the Black Sea coast, 35km from the city centre, the six-runway development will be delivered in four phases. The first phase aims to serve 90 million passengers per year; this will increase to over 150mppa once fully complete.

The architectural design of the Istanbul New Airport will reflect the unique character of the surrounding area and Terminal 1 will be the world’s largest airport terminal under one roof, with a gross floor area close to 1,000,000sqm.

Grimshaw Partner, Andrew Thomas, says: “We look forward to applying our aviation expertise to these growing markets and delivering world-class airports which create a true sense of arrival for the millions of passengers travelling to these destinations.

"These projects are a vital step in the growth of both the economies of Istanbul and Lima.”
