Architectural firm Nordic has won the design competition for the expansion of Keflavik International Airport in Iceland. The expansion project will boost the maximum passenger capacity at the airport to over eight million a year.

The design from Nordic includes a flexible and robust framework that allows for further development of the airport leading up to 2040. The plan also optimizes the use of existing facilities, runways and buildings.

A key advantage of Nordic's proposal is that the development can occur without disturbing the running of the airport, which ensures that the project is in accordance with the goals of Isavia, the operator for Keflavik.

Nordic competed against five other internationally recognized architects in the competition including EC Harris (UK), Ineco (Spain), NACO (Holland), Ramboll (Denmark), and a partnership between Mott MacDonald and VJI Consulting (UK and Iceland).
