Beumer Group, along with its main contractor Vinci Construction, has completed the installation of one of the largest A380 arrivals baggage handling systems (BHS) in the UK at London Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 4 (T4).

Beumer Group UK designed, supplied and installed the new Reclaim 1 system, which provides T4 with additional capacity to handle the increased baggage levels from the wide-bodied A380 aircraft.

During the installation, Beumer Group integrated a 633ft long arrivals carousel, with 22 belt conveyors, automatic tag readers (ATR) and security shutters, in addition to field equipment, cabling, local motor-control panels and emergency stop units. The high-level controls for the baggage system, such as SCADA and SAC, were also updated and integrated into the existing control systems in the T4 reclaim hall.

Peter Gilks, managing director – airports division, Beumer Group, said, “Beumer Group was awarded the contract for this prestigious project due to our proven ability to upgrade legacy baggage systems with minimal disruption to the normal operation of the airport. Meticulous planning at every stage of the installation, testing and commissioning process was essential to ensure a smooth and successful handover of the arrivals baggage handling systems to Heathrow Airport, on time and as promised.”
