The newly redeveloped A$45m (US$32m) International Terminal at Brisbane Airport in Australia was officially opened today (October 28) by Warren Truss MP, deputy prime minister of Australia and minister for infrastructure and regional development.

Julieanne Alroe, CEO and managing director for Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC), the airport operator, said, “This project has been a labor of love for everyone who has worked on it over the last few years, helping to create a truly unique gateway to Queensland.

“Everything we set out to achieve was accomplished to the highest quality, all while working within a secure terminal which continued to operate 24/7. This project was completed on time and on budget without any major disruptions to passengers or operations due to a focused and collaborative approach by all.

“Everyone associated with the project from the architects and designers, contractors, retailers, project managers, operations team and tenants are to be commended. Not one detail has been overlooked and the result is outstanding.”

The redevelopment project aimed to create a distinct space that differentiated Brisbane Airport from other airports around the world. The project has already been recognized with an award for Excellence in Design from the Queensland Property Council.

Brisbane Airport’s newly redeveloped terminal includes a themed departures lounge, walkthrough duty free stores for departures and arrivals, several specialty retail outlets and restaurants, and panoramic views of the airport’s runways.

To help create a sense of place for passengers, BAC asked Queensland artists to provide artwork that reflected the local region, while local building materials were used wherever possible. This included locally sourced stone, timbers and plants, which define the terminal’s dedicated work and relaxation areas. Additionally, the construction of three new airline lounges and a day spa are scheduled for completion in early 2016.
