Melbourne Airport has completed the opening of Terminal 4, its newest domestic terminal and the world's first to open as a complete self-service operation. The terminal has been opened to passengers in two stages over the past few months as final touches to the customer experience, look and feel were completed.

The airport welcomed Tigerair Australia to its new home on August 18 while Jetstar relocated from Terminal 1 on November 10. Regional Express Airlines currently arrives at T4 and will move its check-in facilities to the new terminal in early 2016.

T4 is located to the south of Terminal 3 built on 215,000ft2 over three levels and can accommodate up to 10 million passengers a year. Almost 1.1 million passengers have been the first to enjoy the state-of-the-art facilities since it first opened in August.

T4’s check-in process incorporates the latest technology to make it a complete self-service operation and, coupled with automated bag drop facilities, the streamlined process provides passengers with a quick and easy start to their journey.

On Level 1, a shopping and dining experience awaits in the departure lounge where more than 30 retail, food and beverage stores have opened.

Getting to and from the new T4 has also been made easy with car parking, drop-off, pick-up, buses and taxis all under the one roof at the new transport hub, located only a few minutes’ walk away.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lyell Strambi commented, “This official opening of T4 is another milestone in the transformation of Melbourne Airport – which has responded to the growth of domestic aviation in Australia.

“Terminal 4 provides our passengers with a new level of service, and our airline customers the room to keep growing their business to meet demand for air travel.

“The construction of Terminal 4 was a huge effort to coordinate around a 24/7 airport operation, and I would like to thank our airline customers, project managers and construction team for their patience and perseverance.”
