Airport News – TAV awarded US$1.1bn terminal construction contract for Bahrain International

Turkish engineering firm TAV Construction has been awarded a US$1.1bn contract to build a new terminal at Bahrain International Airport in the Middle East.

The new 2,370,000ft² facility will increase the airport’s capacity from four million to 14 million passengers annually. The contract also includes the construction of a main service building and multi-story parking garage, as well as air- and land-side infrastructure works. TAV will build the new terminal in partnership with Dubai-based construction firm Arabtec. Work is scheduled to begin in March 2016 with completion set for 2020.

Sani Şener, president and CEO, TAV Group, said, “Since the Istanbul Ataturk Airport project in 2000, we have built a total of 16 airports in the Middle East and North Africa region and seven of them are the gateways of the capital cities of their respective countries.

“We are proud to be announced as the preferred bidder and to add Bahrain International Airport to our portfolio, which includes ongoing projects in the UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

“We’ll employ our extensive expertise at the Bahrain Airport project and continue contributing to the development of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.”
