Virgin Atlantic has just established a new board level position to help them recover from the £132 million loss they incurred last year.

The new role of chief commercial officer has been taken by Julie Southern, formerly the airline's chief financial officer. Julie Southern will oversee network expansion, trade alliances and increasing revenue through pricing, sales and marketing.

Her former job is taken by Tim Livett, previously the airline's finance director, who also joins the board.

Virgin Atlantic's losses, for the year to the end of February 2010, compared with a £60 million pre-tax profit in the previous 12 months. However, it said it was now "turning its sights on growth and development".

The airline's chief executive Steve Ridgway said: "This promotion and change of emphasis for Julie will enable Virgin Atlantic to change gear in its recovery from the recession."
