UK budget carrier EasyJet today announced that Lisbon will become its 20th European base.
EasyJet will add 10 new routes from Lisbon when it opens the base during the 2011 winter season. It will invest €300 million ($418.8 million) and base up to seven Airbus A319s at the new base.
EasyJet, which already serves 15 destinations from Lisbon, expects passenger numbers to increase by 1 million to 2.5 million when the new base opens.
"The increase in EasyJet aircraft based in Lisbon will stimulate demand and contribute to visitor numbers by over 1 million passengers a year, with clear benefits to the Portuguese economy," says EasyJet chief executive Carolyn McCall.
