Press release: Chopin Airport installs facilities for smokers

Three state-of-the-art smoking facilities have been put in place for passengers departing from Chopin Airport – two big ones, accommodating up to 14 people, are available in the piers close to the gates and a smaller, 7-person smoking room in the VIP terminal. Up until now there had been no designated smoking areas in the terminal. Smokers had to light up outside and once in the duty-free area, after security, they were not allowed to smoke at all.

“The decision to provide smoking areas within the terminal building was a response to the needs of our passengers. They had nowhere to smoke after checking in and proceeding to the restricted area. We wanted to change that. Modern smoking facilities are a way to improve the travel experience without affecting non-smokers,” said Michał Hofman, manager of Chopin Airport’s Passenger Service Quality and Handling Processes Section.

The smoking rooms, which have been installed by Palarnie.pl, have multi-stage air filtration systems and fire retardant ashtrays. Cigarette butts and tar accumulating in the filters will be emptied out on a regular basis and processed in special environmentally friendly incineration plants.

“That way everyone’s happy: smokers have a nice and clean place where they can enjoy their cigarette, non-smokers are no longer subjected to the smoke and smell and the eco-friendly waste treatment is safe for the environment,” enthused Maciej Nasiński, chief executive of Palarnie.pl, the company that installed the smoking facilities at Chopin Airport.

Similar smoking areas can be found at Europe’s largest airports (e.g. in Amsterdam and Munich) and in the Polish parliament.
