Leh Airport to develop new terminal to increase capacity
Situated at 3,256m (10,682ft) above sea level, Kushok Bakula Rimpoche Airport in Leh, India, is gearing up for the construction of a new terminal. According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the terminal is being constructed to accommodate a growth in traffic and improve the passenger experience.
AAI claims the terminal will be four-star GRIHA-rated energy efficient building with 18 check-in counters, inline baggage handling systems and a centralized cooling and heating system to ensure passenger comfort during the extreme winter conditions the area can experience.
Additionally, it says the terminal is being designed to blend with the area’s existing landscape; the design of the building will reflect the philosophy of ancient Buddhist wisdom entwined with a modern ethos, incorporating Buddhist design elements in the overall look and feel of the building.
Leh is a prime tourist destination, and the AAI hopes the new terminal will help boost returning visitor numbers, as global travel resumes with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions both in India and across the globe.
