L&T and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Win Al Maktoum Airport APM Contract
The Transportation Infrastructure business vertical of L&T, in consortium with Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has secured a large order to design and build the Automated People Mover (APM) System for Phase 1 of Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai.
The project is being developed by Dubai Aviation City Corporation and implemented through Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects as part of Al Maktoum International Airport’s long-term, multi-phase expansion programme.
Once fully developed, Al Maktoum International Airport is planned to become the world’s largest airport, with the capacity to handle up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight annually.
The MHI-L&T consortium will provide the APM system on a turnkey basis, covering the design, construction, supply, testing, commissioning and operational readiness of the associated infrastructure and systems.
Under the Design-and-Build contract, L&T’s responsibilities will include the design, procurement, delivery and integration of critical APM infrastructure and systems. These include guideways, DC traction substations, power distribution, signalling and telecommunications, onboard vehicle communication systems, platform screen doors and depot equipment.
Ramkumar S, Executive Vice President & Head – Transportation Infrastructure, L&T, said:
“This project demonstrates the scale and complexity of the integrated APM rail systems that L&T is positioned to deliver. With challenging execution milestones, advanced technologies and multiple interfaces across guideway, power supply, telecommunications, platform screen doors and depot equipment, the project combines MHI’s established APM technology with L&T’s experience in integrated systems delivery, with a strong focus on safety and quality.”
L&T is a major provider of turnkey Design-Build and EPC solutions for railway and metro projects, with capabilities spanning design, engineering, procurement, project planning, quality control and execution. The company is currently involved in integrated rail systems projects including the Mumbai Metro, Dhaka Metro and Jakarta MRT.
The Al Maktoum International Airport APM project further strengthens L&T’s presence in the region and adds to its portfolio of large-scale integrated transport infrastructure projects across West Asia.
