Sheremetyevo International Airport strategic facilities for World Cup 2018

By 2018, sports teams, officials, fans and Sheremetyevo International Airport passengers will be able to depart from the new terminal, to move between the terminals directly under the airfield, and the airlines will have ample opportunities thanks to the new cargo and refueling complexes.

Sheremetyevo International Airport held a large-scale presentation and a press tour with the participation of Director General of “MASH” JSC M.M. Vasilenko, other airport senior executives and partner companies. The main federal channels, top-rated socio-political, business and industry media, as well as leading experts and top bloggers attended the event.

Director General of MASH JSC M.M. Vasilenko, emphasizing the importance of these projects, said:

“The implementation of Sheremetyevo development program will help us become one of the largest passenger and cargo hubs in the world. This will increase the attractiveness of Moscow as an international financial center and raise the level of competitiveness of our country as a whole. It is important to note that the airport development has an increasing impact on the economy of the Moscow region, where we are both a significant industrial growth driver and a logistics center, and the largest taxpayer, and an attractive employer. When implementing major projects, the most important task for us is to keep the growth rate of shipments and the highest quality standards of passenger service: now, airport is a global leader in flight punctuality and the European leader in terms of service quality. The commissioning of the main facilities is scheduled for 2018 FIFA World Cup. We will meet guests at the highest level, since it is at Sheremetyevo that their Russian experience will begin.”

Sheremetyevo International Airport has ambitious goals and tasks associated with ensuring long-term sustainable growth of the primary carrier “Aeroflot”, a strategic partner “Volga-Dnepr” and other airlines. To this end, a long-term development and modernization program with a planning horizon until 2026 has been developed. By this period, airport capacity will have reached 80 million passengers per year. The most important stage of the program is airport preparation to 2018 FIFA World Cup. By this time, commissioning of terminal B, interterminal passage, new cargo and fueling complexes, independent third runway RW-3, expansion of Starosheremetevskoe highway and reconstruction of Terminal C is planned.

A unique and innovative project is interterminal passage with tunnels to connect all passenger terminals of the airport.

For the first time in the world, passengers and baggage will be transported under the existing runways. The access to the interterminal passage will be enabled through comfortable station complexes. Investments in the interterminal passage will amount to $245 million.

The automated system of passenger transportation will ensure transportation of at least 11.5 million passengers a year, and the baggage system — of 5.9 million bags per year. The passengers travel time between the North Terminal Complex and the South Terminal Complex will not exceed 5 minutes. Tunnel length shall make up 1936 m, the diameter — 6 m.

To date, 600 meters of the passenger tunnel has been laid and it has crossed the high speed taxiway and the baggage tunnel reached the level of 300 meters.

The new Terminal B with an estimated capacity of 20 million passengers per year and a total building area of 114,000 m2 will become the main air terminal for the Sheremetyevo internal line passengers. The automated integrated baggage handling system of the new terminal will allow processing up to 4800 bags per hour. Investment volume in Terminal B will amount to $305 million.

The architectural solution of the new Terminal B will be implemented in the aesthetics of Russian Constructivism.

Three business rooms of a total area of 4,000 m2, 250-300 seats each, and a VIP room with a planned area of 1,600 m2 will be available for passengers. VIP airport lounge Merkurij (Mercury) will be available for the disabled passengers. The new terminal will be connected to the pedestrian gallery with a multistorey 2500 places parking.

After the commissioning of the first line, the new cargo complex will be able to handle up to 380,000 tons of cargo per year. In the future, thanks to the modular design of the complex, its capacity can be increased up to 1 million tons of cargo per year. Total area of the new cargo terminal will be 47,000 m2. The investment volume into the cargo complex will amount to $85 million.

The new cargo complex will be fitted with the advanced technology allowing cargo storage and handling in the airport cargo terminal become the most automated one for the first time in Russia. The storage system is designed for 3,898 pallets and 612 pallets storage places with 160 of them equipped with a temperature control system. The complex is planned to be equipped with 28 points for cargo receipt and delivery and 17 conveyor lines with access to the airport.

The total volume of private investment in the construction of these facilities will exceed $865 million. Implementation of development projects will open a new stage in the history of the main air hub of the country. By 2018,

Sheremetyevo performance will have been significantly improved:

  • The total number of take-off and landing operations using three runways will increase from 55 to 90 units per hour;
  • The total capacity of the terminal will increase from 9,008 to 13,118 passengers per hour;
  • The annual airport capacity will have increased to 55 million passengers by 2018.

Sheremetyevo transformation into a comfortable efficient passenger and cargo hub — a strong competitor of the leading hubs in Europe — meets the growing needs of the market and creates favorable conditions for the long-term development of Aeroflot PJSC, Volga-Dnepr GC and other aviation partners.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russia’s largest airport in terms of passenger and cargo traffic, takeoff and landing operations, and the airport complex area. The Sheremetyevo route network covers more than 200 destinations. In 2015, the main air harbor of the country served 31 million 612 thousand passengers.

Sheremetyevo is recognized to be the best airport in Europe in terms of the quality of service in 2012, 2013 and 2015 according to ASQ (Airport Service Quality) ACI (Airports Council International) rating.
