VINCI Airports distinguished by ACI for dynamic recovery and environmental leadership

VINCI Airports performs this year in the ACI rankings (Airport Council International), the world reference of the airport industry, for its capacity to achieve dynamic traffic recovery while leading airports’ environmental transition.

In Portugal, where VINCI Airports operates all the country’s airport system, Madeira airport is distinguished as Best European Airport 2023 in the under 5 million passengers category, and Porto airport is highly recommended in the 10-25 million passengers category. The industry recognized VINCI Airports’ traffic recovery, with Madeira airport welcoming +4 million passengers in 2022, an all-time high in the airport’s history. The positive dynamic remains strong in 2023, thanks to the proactive connectivity development which allows Madeira airport to offer 59 routes this summer, including 7 new routes with Budapest, Paris, Valencia, Malaga, Milan, Rome and New York.

The award also acknowledges VINCI Airports’ environmental leadership, with the ACA 4+ certification achieved in Madeira airport as in all other airports in Portugal, which thus becomes the first country in the European Union to have its entire airport system (10 airports) certified by ACA 4+. Implementing VINCI Airports’ environmental program has allowed Madeira airport to replace conventional lighting by LEDs, renew the airport’s fleet with low emission vehicles, implement intelligent consumption monitoring system for electricity and water and optimize heating and cooling temperatures.

VINCI Airports also received the Eco Innovation Award for environmental excellence at London Gatwick airport for its sector-leading “net gain” approach to protecting and enhancing biodiversity and habitats on the airport estate. London Gatwick airport also recently took a historic commitment to reach Net Zero emission (scope 1 and 2) by 2030, 10 years ahead of its previous commitment, thus aligning with VINCI Airports’ environmental ambition. London Gatwick airport will invest over £250 million to reduce carbon emissions, by moving to electric vehicle fleet and replacing gas boilers and refrigerants with low carbon alternatives, reducing overall energy use, investing in on-site renewable energy, including solar power, and source renewable electricity through Power Purchase Agreements.

Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of VINCI Concessions and President of VINCI Airports, declared: “These awards bring international recognition to the extraordinary work our teams are doing to achieve both traffic recovery and environmental transformation. We are accelerating our decarbonation while keeping our airports dynamic and well-connected to the world, to the benefit of the regions we serve”.
