The new US$1.4 billion Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport opened its doors on 16 May after four years of construction.
The 1.2 million square foot terminal, which began construction in summer 2008, will feature a new 12-gate Concourse F that connects with the existing concourse E, eight security checkpoints for international departing passengers, five security recheck lanes for domestic connecting passengers, a new Customs and Border Protection facility and two parking structures with more than 3,500 parking spaces.
The LEED-certified terminal will also include a number of new food and beverage and retail outlets following the approval of a US$3 billion concessions contract by Atlanta City Council in January 2012.
“The opening of the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal is a major milestone for Hartsfield-Jackson airport and the City of Atlanta,” said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. “The international terminal will strengthen Atlanta’s position as the capital of the southeast and a vital global gateway for the United States. Our city has long been a preferred destination for international business and tourism, and I look forward to May 16 when we greet travellers from around the world in this new, state-of-the-art terminal.”
Delta Air Lines flight 295 to Tokyo-Narita will be the first flight to depart Concourse F at the new Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal and Delta flight 177 from Dublin, Ireland, will be the first arrival on the new concourse.
The airline’s newest Delta Sky Club will also open in Concourse F, offering space for more than 300 guests as well as world-class amenities including eight shower suites, multiple work areas and art designed to capture the spirit of Delta’s international destinations. The Club also offers The Luxury Bar with premium wines, champagne and spirits available for purchase. Windows across the Club offer mezzanine-level views of Delta’s operations in Atlanta.
“The new international terminal is Atlanta’s new front door to the world,” said Richard Anderson, Delta’s chief executive officer. “On behalf of Delta people worldwide, I want to congratulate aviation general manager Louis Miller, Mayor Kasim Reed and the City of Atlanta for seeing this project to its completion and thank them for continuing the strong partnership Delta has had with the airport and city for more than 70 years.”
