San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has been presented the 2012 Airports Going Green Award for its Employee Wellness Program, which focuses on promoting good employee health.

The airport has been actively promoting employee wellness for several years through fitness, preventative health care, nutrition, and education programmes. In 2011, SFO took additional steps to appoint a Wellness Coordinator and form a Wellness Advisory Council to facilitate employee feedback.

In the spring of 2012, SFO sponsored its annual “Shape Up San Francisco” Walking Challenge, in which over 600 airport employee volunteers walked a total of 1,016 miles over 10 weeks, or the equivalent of the California coastline.

Speaking at the awards ceremony hosted by the Chicago Department of Aviation, airport director John L. Martin said, “We are honoured to be recognised by Airports Going Green for our Employee Wellness program. Our efforts demonstrate our commitment to be an environmentally sustainable airport, as well as our goal to make SFO a great place for employees to work.”
